Applications

Fire suppression for critical environments. DueNorth supports special-hazard fire suppression projects where equipment protection, operational continuity, enclosure conditions, occupancy, system configuration, and applicable approval requirements must be evaluated together.

Selection starts with the hazard

The application category is a starting point, not the design basis

Final system selection depends on the specific hazard, fuels, enclosure, occupancy, equipment sensitivity, available storage space, piping constraints, operating requirements, applicable standards, configuration-specific approval status, and Authority Having Jurisdiction requirements.

Choosing the right suppression approach
Why FK-5-1-12

Why FK-5-1-12 is considered

FK-5-1-12 is commonly considered for enclosed hazards where the following are important:

Rapid suppression
Electrically non-conductive agent
No agent residue after discharge
Minimal cleanup associated with the suppression agent
Protection of sensitive and high-value equipment
Business and process continuity
Total-flooding protection of appropriate enclosed hazards
FK-5-1-12 is not appropriate for every hazard. It is not used on fires involving materials that contain their own oxidizer, reactive metals, metal hydrides, or chemicals capable of autothermal decomposition, or on other hazards outside the listed and application limits of the specific system. Suitability is confirmed through project-specific review.
Other applications

Other applications that may be appropriate

Beyond the five primary applications, FK-5-1-12 may also be appropriate for other enclosed hazards, including:

UPS rooms
Communications rooms
Security and control spaces
Laboratories and test equipment
Cable and electrical spaces
Machinery enclosures
Selected process areas
Other enclosed special hazards

Suitability depends on the hazard, fuel, enclosure, occupancy, operating conditions, applicable codes, and the listed capabilities of the system. Contact DueNorth to discuss an application that is not listed here.

Project review

A disciplined application review

Hazard and fuels
Enclosure integrity and leakage
Occupancy and egress
Equipment sensitivity
Storage-space limitations
Piping routes and hydraulic limitations
Pressure-relief requirements
Shutdowns and operating sequence
Lifecycle and maintenance considerations
Applicable standards and approvals
Application categories do not determine the final system. Total-flooding protection requires enclosure-integrity evaluation, and pressure-relief requirements must be evaluated where applicable. Occupied-space use requires a project-specific personnel-safety review. System design must follow current controlled documentation; approval status varies by configuration and jurisdiction; and final design and acceptance remain subject to qualified system design and Authority Having Jurisdiction review.
